How regional ABC prices are used

Virginia ABC and other control-state or retail snapshots are reference prices for a place and time — never a national average.

Reference prices, not “the” US price

Alcohol retail in the United States is fragmented. Some states operate control systems for spirits and wine. Others license private stores. Grocery beer pricing varies by chain and week. BoozeRatio therefore treats prices as labeled references with region and provenance — not as a single national shelf average.

When Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) list prices are imported, they describe that system’s published prices for listed products. They are useful if you shop in Virginia or want a transparent public reference. They are misleading if you pretend everyone in the country pays ABC prices.

What ABC lists usually cover

Control-state spirits and wine lists are strong for those categories. They generally do not sell mainstream beer the way a grocery store does. Beer, hard seltzer, and cider rows on BoozeRatio typically rely on other retail snapshots, producer packs, or estimates until you enter a local price.

Utah’s DABS and similar sources, when used, are likewise regional. Always read the offer’s region and retailer fields on a drink detail page.

Precedence when several prices exist

  1. Your override (localStorage on your device)
  2. Selected reference offer (if you pick an alternate pack)
  3. Default reference offer
  4. Estimate
  5. Unavailable (null — not zero)

Alcohol per dollar simply does not rank when price is unavailable. Alcohol per 100 calories can still rank if nutrition exists.

Why this matters for rankings

Sorting the whole catalog by alcohol / $ with a mix of Virginia spirits prices and Midwest beer estimates is still useful if you understand the caveats — but it is not a scientific national index. Prefer filtering by category, setting a baseline in your usual style, and overriding prices for the store you actually visit.

Share links can include your overrides only when you opt in, so a friend in another state does not silently inherit your shelf.

Transparency habits we keep

What to do as a shopper

  1. Open the drink you care about and read the offer region.
  2. Edit the package price on Compare to match today’s shelf tag.
  3. Re-check alcohol / $.
  4. Send feedback if an ABC or retail row looks wrong.

Control states versus license states

In a control jurisdiction, the state (or a state authority) is often the wholesaler or retailer of record for spirits and sometimes wine. Published price lists can be unusually transparent compared with private grocery negotiations. That transparency is a gift for a comparison site — and a trap if readers assume the list applies on the other side of a state line.

License states rely on private retailers. Two stores a mile apart can disagree by several dollars on the same 750 mL vodka. BoozeRatio cannot scrape every endcap. Overrides exist so your ranking reflects the sticker you see.

ETL honesty

When monthly or quarterly imports refresh ABC rows, effective dates and source URLs should travel with the offer. If a product disappears from a list, we prefer unavailable prices over inventing a guess. Estimated retail seeds remain labeled estimates. Mixing those layers without labels would recreate the “fake national average” problem this guide warns about.

Beer exception again

Shoppers sometimes ask why a famous lager has an “estimated retail” note while a vodka has an ABC regular price. Category distribution rules explain it. Use the beer catalog’s retail snapshots, your override, or feedback requests for missing local SKUs — not the spirits price list.

Cross-checking before you share a link

If you share a compare URL with prices included, warn the recipient that the dollars are yours. If you share without prices, they will see reference offers that may not match their state. Either way, the ABV and calorie fields are the stable part of the story.
